About Harvard Business School

The mission of Harvard Business School is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world.   Founded in 1908, Harvard Business School is nearly as old as the concept of management education itself-and in less than a century, the School has produced leaders and ideas that have shaped the practice of management in vital organizations of every kind around the globe.

Renowned for creating the world's first MBA program as well as its introduction of the case method to management education in the 1920s, the School was also the leader in developing executive education in the middle of the century. Widely recognized for its closeness to practice, the faculty has conducted pioneering research that has led to the creation of such fields as organizational behavior and marketing and made key contributions to the understanding of leadership, strategy, and decision making.

Today, the work of the School is uncommonly international in scope with its network of five research centers on four continents around the world. HBS also operates Harvard Business School Publishing, whose activities include Harvard Business Review, Harvard Business School Press, newsletters, conferences, case studies, and e-learning products. Firmly grounded in the principles of general management, the School's 65,000 alumni are leaders in an exceptionally broad spectrum of industries and a wide range of organizations around the world, including entrepreneurial companies, established firms, government, and nonprofit organizations.
