The Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)

An international agreement was signed between the Foundation and the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, in 1981, to provide scientists from the developing countries with opportunities to conduct research and to study new developments in physics and mathematics. The scope of the activities has since been broadened to include applied and related fields of science as well as support diploma students in the Arab region.

Agreement Period

On-going since 1981, modified in 2007 for five years (2007 – 2012).

 About ICTP

Founded in 1964, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) operates under the aegis of two United Nations Agencies: UNESCO and IAEA and is regularized by a seat agreement with the Government of Italy. Its goals are to:

  • Foster the growth of advanced studies and research in physics and mathematics, especially among researchers from developing countries;
  • Provide an international forum for the exchange of information and ideas among scientists from the North and South;
  • Maintain excellent research facilities for visitors, associates and fellows, principally from developing countries, who participate in the Centre's research and training activities.

Components of the Program

  • Partially support activities at ICTP each year.
  • Support scientists from the Arab region and/or from Muslim countries for taking part in ICTP’s scientific programs.

  • Support two diploma students from the Arab region.
