The Kuwait Programme at LSE

The Kuwait Programme at LSE is a partnership between the Foundation and the London School of Economics and Political Science.  The purpose of this agreement is to establish a prestigious multidisciplinary global programme of mutual benefit to both sides, on issues of importance to Kuwait and the Gulf region.  These issues will include development, governance and globalization in both political and economic aspects. It will include high level scholarly research on priority topics, academic exchanges, seminars and conferences.  The Kuwait Programme at LSE is an opportunity to broaden and deepen the foundation of knowledge about Kuwait and the Gulf States at a time when the role of this region in world affairs is more prominent and critical than ever before.

Agreement Period

Ten years (2007 – 2017)

About The London School of Economics and Political Science

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a world class centre for its concentration of teaching and research across the full range of the social, political and economic sciences. Founded in 1895 by Beatrice and Sidney Webb, LSE has an outstanding reputation for academic excellence.  The study of social, economic and political problems covers not only the UK and European Union, but also countries of every continent. From its foundation LSE has aimed to be a laboratory of the social sciences, a place where ideas are developed, analysed, evaluated and disseminated around the globe.

The School is a world centre for advanced research. In 2001, the School’s research was rated second among around 200 universities and colleges.  There are currently over 30 active research centres and units at the School, ranging from large multidisciplinary centres with substantial financial support to small centres with more modest resources.

LSE's Research Lab is the base for more than 260 staff - one of the largest concentrations of applied economic, financial and social researchers anywhere in the world. The Lab includes the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion, Centre for Economic Performance, Financial Markets Group and the Suntory and Toyota International Centres for Economics and Related Disciplines.

LSE maintains close links with government and other bodies.  Many of its staff are actively engaged in policy development through membership of advisory bodies such as the Monetary Policy Committee, Low Pay Commission and the Press Complaints Commission.

LSE’s governing body is the Council, responsible for determining strategy and its members are company directors of the School.  The Court of governors deals with some constitutional matters and has influence in the School through pre-decision discussions on key policy issues and the involvement of individual governors in LSE’s activities.

Components of the Programme

  • The Kuwait Endowed Professorship of Economics and Political Sciences is occupied by Prof. Tim Besley.  The Kuwait Professor will exercise a leadership role in advancing the academic goals of The Kuwait Programme through his work and will advise on the best use of resources to promote the goals of the Programme.  He will also take a first hand interest in key issues affecting the economic development of resource rich economies, particularly the Gulf States as well bringing recognition of Kuwait to prestigious academic and policy-making circles around the world.

  • The Kuwait Research Programme in Development, Governance and Globalisation in the Gulf States:  This Programme will be hosted in LSE’s prestigious interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Global Governance.  The focus of this multidisciplinary programme will include such topics as globalization, economic development, diversification of and challenges facing resource rich economies, trade relations between the Gulf States and major trading partners, e.g. Europe, Asia, USA, energy trading, security and migration. This Programme will fund the following modalities:

Research: New Research will be funded for the Programme which will involve post-doctoral researches and Ph.D. students, and modest funding for interdisciplinary research about regional and global issues related to Kuwait and/or the Gulf States.

Academic Networks: Focus on the academic development of Kuwait and Gulf States universities through research networks established between Kuwait, the Gulf States and the UK, which will include short-duration visiting exchange professorships between LSE, Kuwait University and other Higher Education and Research Institutions in the Gulf and graduate students from these institutions.

Seminars Series: will be held at LSE, Kuwait University and other Higher Education and Research Institutions throughout the Gulf, where research findings can be shared with a wider academic and policy-making audience.

Biennial Kuwait Conference: held every other year and alternating between Kuwait and a major Gulf States city or London to establish a prestigious and consistent forum for addressing major issues facing Kuwait and the Gulf States.
