Research Grant Program
Program Description
The
Research Directorate (RD) at KFAS was established in
1977 to support the advancement of science and research
within the State of Kuwait. Since then, the Research
Grant Program, Assigned Research Program and Kuwaiti
Shareholding Companies (KSC) Program constituted the
three major funding programs of RD.
In 2011, KFAS newly adapted strategy allocated
Research Grant Program and Assigned/Priority Research
Programs activities to Thrust 2 (ST2), while KSC Program
activities are allocated to Thrust 4 (ST4).
Program Objectives
The
main objective of this proposal is to formulate
the Research Grant Program work plans in fulfilment of
KFAS vision, namely, “An effective Science, Technology
and Innovation (STI) system and culture, to which KFAS
has contributed, that underpins the sustainable
development of the State of Kuwait”. In developing this
intervention plan, RD has considered input from RD
personnel, as well as international and local review
panels, researchers and partner research institutes.
The Research Grant Program is RD’s main thrust.
The evaluation process of all research elements in RD
programs or KFAS programs will be undertaken at RD. The
scientific researches that are funded by KFAS, spread
across a range of diverse disciplines in basic and
applied sciences, as well as post-graduate and
special (ad-hoc) grant projects and exploratory
short-term projects. The work plan program is
composed of two major activities:
-
Developing an institutional setting at KFAS for the pursuit of research
funding by enhancing research management skills and
promoting an efficient proposal processing system.
-
Catalyzing high quality research and promoting an
effective scientific community.

Program Description
The program aims to support research
that addresses important issues related to water and
energy policies, supply and demand. It will achieve this
through focusing research on priority areas that have
potential to make significant impact and through the
promotion of pilot/demonstration projects that will show
the benefits realized from a potentially promising
technology. Additional activities include support for
research capacity building in local R&D institutions and
communicating the research output to enhance the water
and energy community.
Program Objectives
-
Developing an effective Water and Energy research
community.
-
Funding Water and Energy research projects that
promote efficient water production and utilization
of energy.
-
Developing research capacity building programs in
Water and Energy.
-
Establishing effective outreach activities

Environment Research Program

Program Description
The Environmental Research
Program (ERP) was established in 1988 as part of the
Research Directorate (RD). Since then, the objectives
have been revised periodically. In light of the recent
revision of KFAS’s vision and mission in 2011, the
Environmental Research Program was accordingly
reconsidered and a work plan to re-focus the program was
developed.
Program Objectives
The main
objective of the ERP Intervention Plan is to ensure that it
contributes to the enhancement of environmental
sustainability, leading to a better quality of life, and
conservation and management of biodiversity of Kuwait. The
re-focusing will promote research on priority
environmental issues in Kuwait,
fostering inter-disciplinary approach and engaging local
and international researchers.
The
activities
will include preparing the structural interventions such
as re-establishing the independent Advisory Committee to
help in updating the environmental research strategy and
review existing environmental research projects.
The next step is to translate these priorities to
flagship programs integrating a long-term vision.
Realizing the importance of coordination and
cooperation with various stakeholders for achieving
a significant impact, and the need to disseminate the
outcomes, RD will work towards providing a platform for
encouraging collaboration in environmental research and
presenting outcomes through periodical meetings and
workshops.
