The Translation Unit is part of the Scientific Culture Directorate which is one of the scientific directorates of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science KFAS.  It was established in 2003 to merge and direct the diverse translation projects undertaken by KFAS towards this unit.

The Unit's task is to research, receive, and suggest translation projects to the Authorship Translation & Publications Committee at KFAS.  Then, upon approval, the Unit initiates the translation process which includes the commissioning of translators, scientific, as well as, language editors to undertake these projects.

The focus of the Unit, just as is the general strategy of KFAS, is geared towards scientific projects in the basic and applied science such as the physical, natural and mathematical sciences.  In recent years the Unit added an emphasis on children's scientific publications to its scope of interest, while retaining, among other fields, its interest in translating reference resource libraries.  The Unit continues to survey the media world, in its traditional and digital formats, for the latest in science and technology to have them presented to the Arabic speaking world in the most current mediums available.
