Unprecedented Public Attendance of the Event "Sofia the Famous Robot"

Oct 31, 2019

Organized by KFAS with delivering a valuable lecture within “KFAS Links” Initiative

The Event "Sofia the Robot", organized by KFAS during 24-25 October, has witnessed an extraordinary public attendance from all age groups, especially school students who enjoyed talking with the robot and were amazed by the accuracy of manufacturing and the developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The event, held at the Scientific Center that is affiliated to KFAS, witnessed a great and direct interaction between the audience and the robot; the audience asked direct questions about a variety of issues, while Sofia (the Robot) answered them in an astonishing manner. A number of media institutions has also held special meetings with Sofia the Robot during which they discussed several topics about Sofia.

This event takes place as part of the Space Month hosted by the Scientific Center during this month, which includes a number of various events related to space science, which focus on space-related topics, while its main theme is dedicated to moon landing.

The event was also part of KFAS Links initiative, in which Dr. David Hanson, Sofia’s developer, delivered a lecture at IMAX Hall in the Scientific Center, which was attended by some 200 people who are interested in science and technology. Hanson talked about robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their health uses for the elderly and in factories, and how these inventions and modern developments contribute to space journeys and explorations.

From his part, Qutaiba Al-Rubai, Manager of Knowledge Management at KFAS, stressed the importance of hosting such events, which contribute to the promotion of sound scientific knowledge among the public and the increase of their interest in the demand for science and the consolidation of scientific culture.

Al-Rubai added that hosting of these events also aims to inspire the Kuwaiti youth and motivate them to read more and increase their passion for science and technology. It also aims to encourage youth to continue their efforts and scientific research to contribute to the building of Kuwait in order to achieve its advance, promote the development process and develop its educational and scientific career.

Sophia the Robot is the brainchild of Dr. Hanson. It gives a glimpse into the awe-inspiring potential of AI and robotics and provides enlightening insights into the provocative moral and ethical questions that accompany non-human intelligent life forms.

In 2017, KFAS launched the KFAS Links initiative; it is a series of dynamic lectures and panel discussions held throughout the year, aimed at enhancing the dissemination of science, technology and innovation by the means of creating an interactive platform through which members of the community share knowledge. The lectures will be delivered by leading international experts and researchers with expertise in science, technology and innovation.
