Pilot Trial of RFID Tracking Technology for Pressure Safety Valve

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY
MEOFS was established with a view to servicing the Oil and Gas industry in the region. The company’s founders leverage their technical and commercial experience, complimented with contact base with regional clients, to develop new business opportunities and see them to realization. The company is presently engaged in a number of agreements with innovative technology providers and aims at slowly increasing its portfolio of work to include other facets of the petroleum industry. MEOFS has evolved and expanded into one of the most dynamic entities in the industry through a rapid response to the market growth by providing hands on solutions.

WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM YOU WERE TRYING TO SOLVE?
The specific purpose of this project, was to prove that passive RFID technology could be used with ATEX GC 22 to identify and monitor PSVs in order to support the productivity, reliability and efficiency of equipment and staff in the field. The more general purpose of this project was to demonstrate that passive RFID could be used in extreme ATEX and desert conditions, safely, and thereby prove itself as an underlying technology for the IOT. Doing so gives Kuwait Oil Company the option of using the IOT to manage its oilfields.

HOW DID THE KNOWLEDGE PROVIDER INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT HELP SOLVE YOUR CHALLENGES?
The Knowledge Providers were Raitex Technology/TrackITm Solutions/Northumbria University/Ericsson and Inmarsat. Raitex and TrackIT are RFID specialists. Some engineering advice was received from Northumbria. Ericsson and Inmarsat helped to understand the integration with telecommunications. The key operational field problem was the reliability of the tags; this was solved by research into the design and manufacture of the tags to provide a tag that could survive the climatic conditions. This was resolved by Raitex/TrackIT and Northumbria. At the strategic level Ericsson and Inmarsat helped understand how to integrate the whole into an IOT oilfield model with appropriate telecommunications.

HOW DID KFAS HELP WITH YOUR PROJECT?
KFAS main contribution is in Co-Funding the Project. This project has a high cost to MEOFS and parties involved and KFAS have helped us in making this project a success.

PROJECT IMPACT
Although RFID has been used in industry for some time it is only recently that it has become cost efficient enough to be used on a large-scale basis; and because of its ability to hold data it has become the data carrier of choice for the IOT. Demonstrating that RFID can be used on Site 22 is critical to demonstrating that the technology can be used across an oilfield, in an IOT manner, because of the technical and site challenges faced at Site 22.

The solution will cement MEOFS’ leading position as a technology provider within both the oilfield services sector and the technology sector in general. It will enhance MEOFS as a strategic leader in IOT technology for the oilfield sector. For MEOFS’ principal client it will provide a Kuwaiti technology partner who both understands and can deploy sophisticated RFID and IOT technology without the need to rely on foreign partners. This would be an important step in knowledge transfer. It also demonstrates that a Kuwait partner can undertake sophisticated R&D projects that will ultimately lead to world first and world class technology-based management systems for oilfield control. This reduces human error and will improve quality control, reliability and efficiency through data management systems.

DID YOU SEE THE VALUE IN R&D? AND WHAT OTHER TOPICS WOULD YOU BE INTERESTED TO EXPLORE IN THE FUTURE?
Certainly. MEOFS will disseminate, with Kuwait Oil Company, the learning and good practice demonstrated by success at Site 22 to, firstly, the rest of the Kuwait Oil Company; secondly, by seminars to other K companies and thirdly, via the Energy Institute in the United Kingdom, operations in other parts of the world. Project success will lead to replication across other Gathering Centers in the Kuwait Oil Company remit; from the basis of an IOT technology across the oilfield, and lead to an improved data- based management function that will ultimately lead to improved reliability, productivity, efficiency and quality control across the oilfield.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL OTHERS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF OUR PROGRAMS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO APPLY?

We would highly recommend it to other partners. The process in KFAS was a very smooth process with big support from all employees.
