Huawei and KFAS launch Seeds for the Future 2020 program

40 students from Kuwait to be selected to receive global trainings this year

In collaboration with the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), Huawei, a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices, has launched the 2020 edition of its Seeds for the Future program in Kuwait, to contribute towards building a stronger and more sustainable ICT ecosystem.

Held virtually for the first time due to social-distancing measures, the launch ceremony was attended by Dr Salem Alhajraf, Deputy Director-General of KFAS; Liam Zhao, President of Huawei Gulf North, and Rico Lin, Huawei Kuwait CEO, who were joined by representatives from both organizations.

Students from selected universities across Kuwait were also invited to the virtual ceremony to hear about the educational initiative, and to also get a complete overview of the program.

Seeds for the Future ultimately seeks to develop local ICT talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote a greater understanding of and interest in the technology sector, and to encourage regional participation in Kuwait’s growing digital community. This year’s program will host 40 students from universities across Kuwait. It will offer participants training in emerging technology fields, including 5G, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and leadership to empower students to understand the latest technology trends, discover the technology ecosystem in Kuwait and learn from the best experts.

Huawei’s longstanding Seeds for the Future program is moving forward this year despite disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, as the company and its partners strive to deliver unique academic opportunities to more individuals.

Dr Salem Alhajraf, Deputy Director-General of KFAS, said: “Seeds for the Future has contributed significantly to the development of young men and women in Kuwait over the years, providing them with essential skills and knowledge to participate in building our digital economy. Although slightly different due to COVID-19 precautions, this year’s program will offer selected students an unparalleled opportunity to get ahead in the field of ICT.”

Liam Zhao, President of Huawei Gulf North, said: “The Seeds for the Future program provides students in various countries and regions where Huawei operates with unique opportunities to learn about and get closer access to advanced ICT technologies and products. Through this program, Huawei shares the ICT knowledge and experience we have gained during our global business operations and helps students broaden their horizons and gain more ICT knowledge and skills. These students will, eventually in turn, drive their own local ICT industries and the global ICT industry forward. This program acts as a bridge for communication between different countries and cultures, allowing young people from around the world to learn from each other”.

Initiated by Huawei in 2008, Seeds for the Future is Huawei’s flagship and long-term global CSR program. The company has continued to invest in the program in recent years, launching in Kuwait in 2015. By the end of 2019, through university partnerships and outreach, 5,773 students from 126 countries had completed the program. In 2019, we hosted students from 111 countries. In 2020, the Seeds for the Future Program would have had 40 participants from Kuwait.
