Scientific Missions

The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences is pleased to announce the start of accepting applications for the program of participation in scientific missions. This program is currently limited only to providing the required financial support to cover the registration fees to attend prestigious scientific conferences that are held remotely due to the current circumstances related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The applicant should also fulfil all the criteria stipulated in the policy and conditions of the scientific missions’ program of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.

First: General Conditions:

  1. The application should be related to participation in a prominent scientific conference organized in scientific fields such as engineering, science, medicine, humanities and social sciences, and should be organized by international universities, research centres, or scientific and professional organizations, or held with a major participation from these institutions.
  2. The applicant should be the author of a research paper scientifically accepted and approved by the organizer of the conference. The paper should be presented as part of the conference activities.
  3. The scientific mission application form should be submitted with all the required documents detailed as per the Foundation’s requirements, at least one month before the date of the conference, electronically through the kfas.org portal. All the applications that do not include all the required documents will not be considered before that date. Note that the completion of the required documents does not in any way guarantee the approval of the application for the scientific mission grant.
  4. The scientific mission grant is provided to one researcher only in the case of scientific papers collaboratively written by more than one researcher.
  5. The applicant is not entitled to benefit from financial support to present the same scientific paper more than once, whether the previous grant he had received was from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences or from any other institution.
  6. The scientific paper should include an acknowledgment to the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences for the support received as follows:

We wish to acknowledge the generous financial support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) to present this paper at the conference under the Research Capacity Building/Scientific Missions program.

In Arabic:

نود أن ننوه بالدعم المالي السخي المقدم من مؤسسة الكويت للتقدم العلمي لتقديم هذه الورقة في المؤتمر في إطار برنامج المؤسسة الخاص ببناء القدرات البحثية / المهمات العلمية.

  1. The applicant’s employer should be one of the following institutions: Kuwait University, private universities in the State of Kuwait, the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, ministries, government agencies and institutions and Kuwaiti shareholding companies that contribute to the budget of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences on an ongoing basis.


Second: Conditions for the Applicant (Kuwaiti Nationals):

  1. The applicant should have a PhD or a Master's degree from an accredited university. Postgraduate students are exempted from this condition.
  2. A full calendar year should have passed since the last grant for a scientific mission obtained by the applicant from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.
  3. The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences provides grants for a maximum of two researchers from the same scientific department or program belonging to the same institution to attend the same conference, provided that the applicants are submitting two different scientific research papers.
  4. The maximum number of grants for scientific missions for the same researcher is five.

Third: Conditions for the Applicant (Non-Kuwaiti Nationals):

  1. The applicant should have a PhD degree from an accredited university.
  2. Two full calendar years should have passed since the last grant for a scientific mission obtained by the applicant from The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences.
  3. Only one person from any department or program of the institution where the applicant works can obtain the grant for scientific mission to participate in a conference.
  4. The applicant should have been appointed in his position at his current employer for a full year and should have a valid work contract for at least six months.
  5. The maximum number of grants for scientific missions for the same researcher is five.

Fourth: Required Documents:

  1. A letter from the employer’s higher management addressed to the Director General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences requesting approval of the grant for the scientific mission and indicating that the employer does not object to the applicant’s attendance of the conference and that the employer confirms that the applicant did not receive from his employer any financial support for the scientific mission subject of the application for grant.
  2. For postgraduate applicants, students studying outside the State of Kuwait should submit a letter of approval from the Cultural Office, accompanied by a recommendation from the student’s supervising professor at the university in which he studies. Students studying inside the State of Kuwait should submit a letter of approval from the University President.
  3. An acceptance letter signed and stamped by the organizer of the conference confirming the acceptance of the scientific paper (Acceptance Letter). Note that the acceptance by the conference organizer of the presented scientific paper does not guarantee that the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences would approve the application for the scientific mission grant.
  4. In the event that there is more than one author of the scientific paper, a statement must be submitted with the approval of all researchers participating in the scientific paper to authorize the applicant to present the scientific paper.
  5. A complete copy of the accepted scientific paper in Microsoft Word file format.
  6. A recent copy of the applicant's Curriculum Vitae.
  7. A copy of the civil ID.
  8. A detailed copy of the conference program, including the submitted scientific paper.
  9. A receipt for payment of the conference registration fee.
  10. A report on the participation to be submitted within one month of the conference date.

Additional information:
A symbolic reward is allocated to the applicant and a similar symbolic reward is allocated to the supervising professor as well when the scientific paper is published in one of the best 25% (Q1) of international periodicals and journals (as per the ranking in the scientific field of the student) of the competitive positions of scientific periodicals and journals in accordance with the internationally recognized standards (Journal Citation Reports).
